Why Is A Cold Venti Bigger Than a Hot Venti?

The most significant difference between the cold and hot sizes is the amount of cream or milk they contain. Coffee in a venti is always one size bigger than a coffee in a tall (based on either ounces or fl. oz.).

It means that if you were to put two ventis together, you would be getting 20 ounces of coffee instead of 16 ounces; this is twice as much as the tall cup size. 

It is because you always order a venti coffee hot with one less shot of espresso and a venti cold with one more shot of espresso.

Where do these Starbucks cup sizes come from?

The Starbucks sizes described above are based on the size of the cup, not the measure of coffee grounds used. Each espresso drink is measured in grams, so they can vary depending on which type of coffee you use.

For example, Dunkin' Donuts uses ground coffee in its drinks. They do not use one single ounce per drink. That would make Dunkin' Donuts cups 1/4th smaller than Starbucks Venti Cups (6g vs 8g).

Why Starbucks Insists You Say ‘Tall’ Instead of ‘Small’ When Ordering a Latte

Any coffee at Starbucks calls for a ‘small’, not a ‘tall’. The reason for this is because people are used to drinking coffee in cups, not shot glasses. 

Also, the staff have to prepare espresso shots anyway, so it makes more sense that they say 'tables' instead of 'shot glasses'.

For example, a small coffee is one shot in a 7oz cup or two shots in a 14oz cup. So there is no reason to add ‘tall’ to the Starbucks menu because the same amount of coffee will be made for all ‘small’ sizes.

At Starbucks, there are two sizes of hot & cold espresso drinks. The small size is a single shot of espresso, and the shot glass size is a double shot of espresso. In addition, you can order a 'triple shot espresso' or 'quadruple shot espresso'.
